Friday, July 26: the county fair

He came out about 8:15. Nice and quiet, and went and cuddled with Carly. Colin was out less than a minute later. Colin played with his cars on the track. August went and found Jeff to ask him why there was tape on Colin’s semi trailer.

I made them both cereal. Cassie fell asleep in her car again when she got home. I left at 9:15 and went to Union Coffee again.

I got an egg bowl, cookie, and latte and worked. I stopped and got gas on the way back, and got here at 12:30.

When I got back they were in the garage. I watched them and Carly went in and made lunch: chicken patties, pickles. I Then took a shower. After lunch they played in the bedroom and living room, chewing bubble gum.

Carly took them outside and they did a rotation of water balloons, taking turns spraying her with water, and reading the new book that she bought for August. August was doing a good job saying no to Colin.

Back inside they watched Smurfs and I made a big snack plate of strawberries, carrots, blueberries, and raisins. they ate the whole thing.

They went back outside. Less successful this time, as August hit Colin over the water balloons. It wasn’t too bad though, and Carly ended up having a great talk with August afterwards. Carly told him he could walk away, and he agreed that was a good idea, but said he’d forget what she tells him. He asked her to remind him a lot. We then played trucks again.

We ate quesadillas and burritos for dinner. The kids were being rather frustrating, finding it difficult to sit down and eat. After dinner Vivian set up cups on the counter, stacking them. Colin ran over and knocked them down once, then August and I helped defend from Colin. August was also playing with the helicopter thing (like a pencil with a propeller) and figuring out how to do it with his hands. He had a few good ones. We did a quick Brother game before we got going, about a girl who could teleport stuff to her hand.

We drove to the fair. when we got there August and Vivian chose to go to the butterflies first, and Colin went to see the tractors. As we entered, the guy gave us the instructions and said not to touch the butterflies with your fingers. August asked “Why?” The guy explained the oils on your hands hurt them.

We had fun with the butterflies. We walked up and got G.O.P. balloons and little airplanes from one of the politicians. then walked over and found Cassie and Colin.

Vivian and August wanted to do the panning for gemstones thing, so we did that. They really liked that.

Vivian, August, and I watched the band playing, and Cassie went and got french fries. The band played songs like “We’ve got to get out of this place” and “Stepping Stone”

We looked at the animals, and I started making jokes. When I said “Let’s moooove over there” Vivian said “Nice one!” And August got the joke and laughed when I commented on how we had fair weather today.

They went and played on the playground. Vivian climbed to the top of everything and danced. August would follow her, although skipped the dancing part. We went and got cotton candy, their treat of choice, then got going.

We were home at 9. As I came inside with them August was saying “Creatively stupid” for no particular reason. We talked about how it sounded like the phrase “aggressively cute” from Craig of the Creek. Colin came by saying “poopy head stupid” and August replied “I know, I know. You’ve said that a million times.” I had brought August’s balloon in, which was apparently a mistake. Vivian started crying. When they were driving, Colin’s window was open and his and Vivian’s balloons got sucked out. They started crying for ten minutes. While August said “That’s what I wanted to happen!” (Which is true, as we had to make him agree not to let his balloon go before we let him have one—I had then tied it to his watch so it wouldn’t get away, after it had gotten away from him once, luckily under a tent.)

August and I went into the bedroom so he could play with his balloon in private. When we went out Colin wanted his green rock. Cassie didn’t know where it was, and August offered to get a rock for Colin outside. We got our shoes on and used my phone flashlight to find a good rock. Colin thanked August for the rock.

I looked for Bread and Jam for Francis after I mentioned it and August didn’t remember it. Couldn’t find it on their shelves but found a few other books to read. Didn’t happen tonight though. He waited until they were done with their bath to do his. We said he had done a good job with Colin today and he said “You’re supposed to remind me to walk away.” I set a reminder to remind him tomorrow. In the bathroom they were discussing math and Vivian claimed that anything times one is always one. August corrected her, a bit much, and she got upset. We talked to him about ‘gloating’.

I gave him a quick bath and had him in bed at10:05. He asked Carly to say the mantra. Carly has been talking about exercising to be ready for the hike on the school trip and i heard him ask “Do you ever think you’ll be ready for that hike?”
