Colin went to Carly when he saw her. He told her about his scraper truck, and also said he doesn’t like it when August also needs a hug. Carly pointed out that August has done a pretty good job of sharing her. Carly woke him up about 8:40. A bit later they were talking about how he can roll his tongue, and that comes from her genes. He was then asking about how genes work, and if when a kid grows up and has a baby if the baby would have the same genes. Colin was calling Carly a “green noo noo (noodle)” from dinner the other day.
I read animal books and part of Yertle to Colin. August wanted his iPad and got it. He was missing Vivian, who was up in her room. He was digging through Colin’s box of trucks and asked “Colin, why do you have so many trucks and Astra?” A character from Superwings. He must have watched some Superwings with them at some point. He asked who the helicopter is and Colin told him it is Dizzy.
Vivian finally came down at 10:40. She was still on her iPad, and August was grumpy, leading to a conflict with the tin cans with Colin. We got them off their iPads at 11. August and Vivian were doing karate moves. Cassie, who had gone to the store, had left an old nursing book they could rip apart. So they spent several minutes doing that. He got grumpy with Colin again and Carly went in the room with him or several minutes.
Carly then went outside with them. Didn’t last long though. I was doing something that required internet, and when that finished I went out to join them. But they came in as I headed out. August was grumpy about Colin again and Vivian once again disappeared upstairs. August relaxed by doing math by himself in the bedroom for quite awhile. Colin was grumpy with Cassie, as he wanted to be upside down, then was saying he was tired. A lot of grumpiness this morning; Vivian seemed to handle it the best, with relaxing in her room.
Finally, they ate some lunch, reluctantly, and we got packed up and left at 1. We went in the science center right at 2. August and my membership’s to the Bloomfield in Israel also covered Carly here. And Cassie bought a family membership for them. Later, she saw that the Pacific Science Center was on the list. We were busy in Seattle, so I hadn’t really thought about it. But so is the Museum of Flight, and I feel really bad for not taking August to both this summer. When I had him at the Seattle Center we should have gone straight to the Science Center. And to the museum in Everett.
Anyway, we first went into the lab area. Vivian and August went to work making rockets with Carly and Cassie, and Colin and I did a marble track. Cassie then helped him make a rocket too. Vivian did a parachute while August went over to the marble thing. He needed the bathroom, so I took him to that, then we came back and did some more.
We all moved to the main exhibits on the first floor. August followed Vivian around for a while, then he and I spent a lot of time in the space exploration area. We tried driving a rover on Ceres and did a couple other things on one of the screens, then one of the big cockpits opened up and August and I went in there. First we did a rocket launch, then we did a couple of piloting the rocket ones. We completed the first one, then August wanted to see what happens when you make mistakes (basically, the autopilot takes over).
We went and found the rest. They were playing with the blue blocks. From there they found the pin pushing thing, where they go back and forth between the two sides. I don’t remember playing with one since Korea. They had a ton of fun with that, as one of the science center employees was on the other side, pushing them all back. They did the dancing energy game/competition, then we went into the flashing light room. We drew with the light pens, then did our silhouettes on the wall several times. Vivian would then draw a face on her shadow. A big kid came in and pushed Colin out of the way and got in trouble.
From there, they took turns wearing the helmet and we took photos of them as astronauts. Then headed upstairs. Wandered around up there doing the different energy and movement things. The three of them had a lot of fun with the green screen for the weather forecast.
Back downstairs, about 4, Carly went out to get the snacks. August and Vivian drove the Mack truck. On the computer screen build-a-truck thing August built a long-haul flatbed truck, then Colin built a regional tanker truck, and made it green, of course. We then sat and ate. Vivian danced on the stage area.
Before we left we looked at the magnetic materials in fluids, looking at the different sizes of them in nanometers. We left after 4:30.
Back at the house he and I did the car track and parking garage thing with Colin. We did the tofu with BBQ sauce and rice and coleslaw food dinner, which reminded me of ordering teriyaki. Cherie and Chuck called for a short FaceTime call, although that didn’t last very long as the kids were hyper. August wanted some alone time and went under the small table, which was a good choice, but then Colin wanted under with him, and that became an issue, with August wielding his fork like a weapon. Finally, I distracted Colin, and Cassie offered to take him out to the swing, and he liked that idea.
Vivian was in the middle of telling me something, but then ran out of the room. It had gotten windy outside and there were leaves falling. She was scared for about 10 seconds, but then decided that if Cassie and Colin were still outside it was okay. I went out with her and August. They ran around in the falling leaves, then August did some digging.
Jeff was home about 7 and brought each of the kids a personalized coin of aluminum with their names on it, and the slogan “Lethality starts here.” Which was quite funny then when August used his coin inside to kill a spider.
Jeff had brought his old hakido gear for Vivian, and she and Colin put parts of it on. August and Vivian then went outside to practice a ninja routine. I jumped in the trampoline with Colin, then pushed him around the yard on the little car thing.
Vivian took August over to where their cat is buried. I heard August say “I’m going to pee outside for fun.” They were then looking for cicadas. Carly took over. I was getting attacked.
Inside he sang a “Colin! I see a big spider!” song.
He ate watermelon, then strawberries and whipped cream, like Vivian was doing. He and Vivian played with a blanket on the floor. When he went to take a bath with Vivian and play their last tea game for the summer, Colin used the blankets and pillows and Jeff helped him make a turtle home. He then played with me as he crawled in and out of it.
He and Vivian looked at the star apps. Jeff put one on her iPad, but August had to show her the other one (Night Sky, I think) that has the details of the satellites and other objects. It also has information on each of the stars, and we discussed ‘luminosity’. Vivian went upstairs, and I said good night to Carly and August about 10.

Carly woke him up about 8:30. They came out about 15 minutes later. He had some cereal, then sneezed a total of ten times as he was over talking to Cassie. He went out to get the mail with her. I was working. Back inside, Carly and Cassie and the three kids built things with dominoes in the living room. He was then going out to the bamboo area with Vivian and I helped him get his shoes and socks on. He explained how they protect from the pokies in the bamboo area. He also said that he’d mathematically figured out what words babies speak first (after we’d had a conversation of whether babies actually say ‘goo goo gaa gaa’ and what it means): “Most babies, there’s a 90 percent chance their first word is ‘A’” He then ran off and played in the bamboo area.
He and Vivian came back in and did iPad time. I made them a fruit platter with almonds, and then Carly made them a noodle dipping platter (noodles, sauce, and cheese). They then did scratch paper art. August turned his into an exercise in scraping all the black off of the sheet; something that Vivian had done. Carly did an alien, and a flying truck for Colin.
We got driving to the bowling alley in East Stroudsburg. I led this time. We got to bowling at 2:40. August asked “What’s Mx+b?” as we walked in. It’s the slope equation. He and Carly have been learning about it. Kids used the bathrooms, then got shoes on. The woman gave them one six pound ball to share. Luckily, there was another six pounder, and near the end I had Vivian and August experimenting with the seven pound ball. They were mainly using the ramp, and the seven seemed to keep its momentum better. I think August had the best single roll, an 8, but Vivian gets half the credit as she was helping him aim the ramp.
As we drove up to the bowling alley I was excited to see the Yeungling sign. It’s been a long time since I’ve had a beer at a bowling alley (seems like I once did late night bowling with the guys I lived with, or other employees from the Boys and Girls Club, but almost all my time spent in bowling alleys in Seattle was during the day for Boys and Girls Club trips). And seemed appropriate to have the local beer at least once while here. Alas, food and the bar didn’t open until later.
The kids, and I, were getting in a good groove (experimenting with the balls—I wasn’t actually bowling, as I couldn’t find my pair of socks before we left), when suddenly we were leaving after the fifth frame. We hadn’t put their names on the board, and they never noticed that they were one ball off, as Colin had rolled a ball down the lane before, and then after, I had started it, meaning they each took their turn starting with some balls already down, then bowling at all 10. Anyway, it was lucky they hadn’t payed more attention to the rules. Apparently, Colin was going to have a fit, so we cut things short. I felt really badly about cutting August and Vivian’s time in half though and lying to them that our time was over.
Then, the plan was for Carly to stop by Walmart to buy shoes for August and get some groceries. But the second that August and Colin heard that Carly wasn’t going with them they started to complain and Carly decided to switch. So I went to Walmart. In the confusion, I left my backpack and glasses case in their car. So they caught up to me at Walmart to give them back. I did the grocery shopping, then found 4 pairs of shoes for August to consider. I sent Carly photos. I don’t know why I included the fourth pair. They were cool underneath, but they had these Minnie Mouse things on them. Worst of all, they were shoelace shoes, which I’ve vowed to never buy for him. I was too distracted by the Minnie Mouse things and didn’t notice they were different from the other three pairs. Of course, that was the pair that Vivian chose, so that was what August chose. He’s kind of lost his ability to think on his own by now, deferring to Vivian on almost everything (always the same ice cream flavors, for example, although they had different lollipops at the pool).
I bought those, then had to walk back into Walmart when I forgot cash. I got home after 5:15. They were out at the playground. I gave Vivian the shoes to take to August. Inside, his balloon had wrapped around the fan again. I was able to stand on a chair and reach it and untangle it from the fan. I attached it to Colin’s soldier, like a parachute, and took it outside. Colin did not like what I had done to his soldier, spitting a raspberry at me. Carly switched the weight. August later was playing with it and it came off the string. He took it up to Vivian’s room as a safe place.
I switched with Carly and watched them outside so she could help with dinner. They went inside when Vivian wanted to make her own pizza. I then helped them as Vivian and August, and then Colin, did the spin art things using markers and paint. Mainly, I helped by keeping Colin from pushing his way in. One time, just as August stopped his spinner, Colin reached over and marked on it with a marker. I got stern with Colin, saying if he did that again he’d have to go inside. August handled it really well though, saying it was okay and then adding his own lines to it to make it a pattern. That was an amazing response. August made one using both markers and paint, and I taught him the term ‘mixed media’. A word of the day.
Colin did some too, then went to the side of the house to wash his hands. Suddenly, he was screaming. I ran around there, after removing art from my lap and getting up, to find him stuck, sitting down, in one of the vent holes by the side of the house. Not hurt, but very scary.
Back out back I was talking about favorite foods, and had Colin guess my favorite. He then joked about himself: “I eat chairs…sticks…phones.” Colin got in the trampoline and declared 2 minute turns. That worked well. After a while August noticed the little plastic car and ramp thing. He had me carry him over to it, and rode it down once. I pushed him on it a bit, then pushed Colin around the yard a couple times. Some good exercise. Meanwhile, August and Vivian got out the sprinkler to run through.
Dinner was ready, and we ate our pizza outside. August and Vivian played in the sprinkler more. Colin played with the truck from the firework, pushing it on the porch with a spray of water and pretending it was firing fireworks again. August joked to Carly “I’m brave enough to walk in quicksand…Well, I’m dumb enough.” In discussing dessert, August asked me “Can I have a bit of coffee cuz I need a burst of energy?”
We ended up back inside. August put an olive on his finger, then let Colin eat it. He was then feeding Colin olives from the can, then gave him the can: “I gave Colin the whole can because he’s an olive-eating machine.” Vivian wanted to watch Sarah and Duck. I said they could watch it since we own it. Negotiations broke down over who would choose episodes, with August claiming he was in primary control of his iPad. So I let her watch on mine instead. August watched Sarah and Duck on his iPad in the living room. Worked well, although seemed a little silly. August was hungry so ate more pizza and several slices of apple.
When their time was up the incentive of ice cream worked perfectly to get them off the iPads and outside to clean up the art mess. I then scooped up ice cream for the three of them. Outside with Vivian and Carly, August spotted a planet. They came in to get my phone to figure out which planet it was. It was Jupiter. I got bug spray on and joined them. We did a little astronomy with Vivian. When she spotted a satellite on the app, she ran out into the yard so that she would get her photo taken by a satellite, saying she’d never had that happen before. After a few minutes I broke the news to her that they probably weren’t taking photos of her in the dark, although I pointed out that there are satellites taking photos during the day and you just can’t see them.
Inside, August talked to me about voids and black holes: “a black hole is like a tub of nothingness…” “the Big Bang missed some spaces…” He talked more about his search disk that we saw (an airplane). It does scientific research, and was landing in South America.
They took baths, then Vivian got on her pajamas and put a shirt on her head to protect from mosquitoes. She was a ninja, and had learned how to do it from Wizard School. I looked up and downloaded an app that tells when civic, nautical, and astronomical dusk are, and August and I looked at that and talked about the differences. I took him and Vivian back out. Much darker now. We saw Saturn now, and they were both able to see the Big Dipper and the Milky Way. It was really cool when August looked at the picture of the Big Dipper on the astronomy app, then looked up and actually saw it: “I see it!”
Back inside Vivian and August were talking about space. It was a really philosophical discussion at first, with August basically using the socratic method to get her to think about the space between things and asking her what that thing was. The conversation had actually started with him arguing that time isn’t a ‘thing’, but moved on to space. It was cool to hear Vivian’s thinking change as well, as she moved from thinking that there is always something to contemplating an empty space. They then turned funny as they joked about the black of space being black crayon, etc.
They moved on to dreams, and Vivian talked about her sleep walking. August said he remembers one of his dreams, but didn’t want to tell it to us. He then said that he really sees his dreams, something he has told me in the past. Don’t know if he means regular dreams, or if they are particularly vivid for him. He never talks about what happens in them though. Jeff decided it was time for Vivian to head up, so we went in as well. I left them after 10:30. Carly and August are united in their dislike of bug spray. So maybe camping won’t be a really common activity in the future.

He was up around 8:15, a little after the other two. I said good morning to him, then he went in the other room with Carly. Jeff made pancakes, and while asking August what fork he wanted (or spork, as August wanted) August sneezed, twice, right on the forks. I washed all of those.
He ate his pancake, then a second. He discussed wearing pajamas in Greenland (which he called Greekland) with Cassie. Not sure the whole gist of the conversation, although it started with her commenting on how he was wearing pajamas now, and Colin won’t even wear them in winter. They watched Smurfs, and we got ready to go to the pool. Out in the garage August clipped the “safety ribbon” to the tricycle again. We finally left at 10:50.
I drove with Jeff and Colin. Colin wanted to see the digger, so we went by the road construction site and it was still there. At the pool, we all realized we hadn’t brought floaties for any of the kids. So I drove back and got them. I got back to the pool at 11:50. I tried to take out two of the foam floaty things from his vest, but he spotted it visually before Carly even put it on him. He tried it for a minute, but then requested them back, so I replaced them. I got in the pool and was just about all the way in when everyone else got out for snack time.
They went and just got french fries. I studied Arabic over on the towels and only had a couple fries. I did it so I wouldn’t be tempted to eat a bunch of them. But when they were done Jeff came over and gave me the fry container, saying they’d saved some for me. Luckily, I was able to get August and Colin to eat most of them. They then all got lollipop things for their dessert for the day. August claimed ice cream was a candy, not a treat. Colin wanted me to take a photo of him giving a kiss. He recognized “Pumped Up Kicks” add we added it to his playlist. We discussed why it is sort of an inappropriate song. Colin’s lollipop had a sugar powder with it for dipping. He didn’t do that, but then August pointed out “ he’s dipping his french fry in sugar powder.”
They saw the little train going around, and all of us except Carly went to take a ride on it. We got three full laps of the park area, as it started to rain on the second time around and when that happens the brakes don’t work, so he couldn’t slow down for the ‘station’. So some extra ride for us. Good timing, as they packed up after we were done.
Vivian was going down the waterslide today, many, many times. She went back in the water, as did Colin. August couldn’t be convinced to do so. He walked around bored for a while. Jeff took the red car over to the hardware store for a bit. I remembered I had a set of story dice with us, and August and I did one story, “Dr. Figlemeister’s Sense of Humor”, then Vivian got out of the pool a couple minutes later.
We drove home past the digger again. At the house they used up the rest of their iPad time, doing a bunch of games. I was fine with that, as I watched the incredibly exciting German Grand Prix. When I went outside, Vivian and August were sitting on the little bench swing. They were supposed to be on a calculator app on Vivian’s iPad, but she was on some game. When I pointed that out, someone told her to get off. Sneakily, she tried to go out to the bamboo forest. Colin heard Jeff calling to her, and Colin ran out and chased her around the yard.
I got them in the trampoline. That went fine, and August walked across the grass in his barefeet a few times today. Momentous. It was a lot of exercise, and I was holding Colin’s hands, or feet. But then he wanted to be upside down, and he kept trying to make me hold him just by the feet as I jumped, no hands or head on the trampoline. I had had enough, and Jeff and I tag teamed and he took over.
Inside August and Vivian set up the fort to defend against the evil wizard. Carly made dinner (spaghetti and broccoli/cauliflower and corn on the cob). I studied Arabic and did some work. Vivian sang a “The evil wizard’s stupid” song as they attacked Carly. August then sang through the micorphone thing as well. Carly used the broken burner, which resulted in smoke. August ran out the front door: “Vivian said!” He remembered when there had been the small oven fire at Harstine and Vivian had run out of the house.
We all ate outside. Jeff used the word ‘epoch’, which August didn’t know. I couldn’t remember the slight distinctions between the words (some of which August and I had run into when first talking about words like ‘eon’ and ‘millennium’ so I looked up the Eon->era->period->epoch (shortest) progression and that ‘eon’ can also be a billion years. August also asked what ‘second-to-last’ meant. When Colin wasn’t getting out of the way when August and Vivian wanted to do tricks on the trampoline, we implemented a 30 second turn system, which I timed on my phone. Worked pretty well. Also, August figured out that he can roll his tongue today. Had to stop him from doing it though while he jumped in the trampoline.
Done with the trampoline, Vivian went and was exercising on the pull-up bar. August had started to do “finger exercises” in the trampoline, and did more on the pull-up bar. I thought maybe this came from Cassie talking about gymnastics, but apparently it is from the King Flashypants book Carly has been reading to them.
Inside, August ate a banana at some point. I did a little work and Carly gave him a bath. I helped him brush his teeth out at the kitchen sink while Carly took a shower. August found something in the toy box, and it was a kid hand buzzer thing. Vivian showed him how it works and he really liked it. Carly read King Smartypants to him and Vivian. ‘Bum’ was a new word for him, it sounded like.
I started to put him to sleep. He reminded me of my bad parenting moments, but at least there is just two that he remembers: us getting stuck in the rain after the pizza place, and dropping him in the natural history museum. I read two Skybrary books to him: Good Choice, Camille and the one about the robot that turns everything to metal. Carly came in at 10:30 and put him to sleep.

He was up a bit after 8. Lots of cuddling with Carly. Played with Colin and the cars a bit. Not sure if he had cereal in the morning. They did water balloons with Carly outside, and she helped them build a fort in the bedroom. He and Vivian played in it for a while, then ended up plying Dragonbox Big Numbers. I made a big fruit and veggie plate again, this time with apples, raspberries, blueberries, and carrots.
I went and took a shower. When I came out, Vivian was still playing on his iPad. August and Colin were jumping off the back of the couch, onto the cushions. August got out the yoga mat and lay on it, then Colin came over and he was holding Colin up with his feet. He said “It’s a holding up Colin mat!” They kept joking about it as August added pillows to the mat.
Cassie was home from the grocery store at 11:10 with a helium balloon for each of them. They played with those a lot. They had leftover pizza for lunch, then disappeared. They were sitting on the floor outside of Vivian’s room, watching Inspector Gadget.
We got ready to go (and I had gotten a lot of work in) and left a little after 1. We drove to Klein Farm. First went down to the ponies. They collected food from the ground and mainly fed the ponies. August found a quarter in one of the machines, and later used it to get food out of the machine for Colin. That was very nice. He had been calling it his “emergency quarter”. We walked down and saw the cows again. Vivian was focused on them peeing and pooping. Seemed even smellier than usual, so I snuck back to a bench until they were done down there.
Eventually we went up and got ice cream. I got a pack of cookies instead. August and Vivian both had the toffee flavor, Colin the wintergreen because it was green. He was pretty messy, and August said “A lovely mess I love to watch him make.” He also said “ This is egg-celent…I made an egg pun.” He knew several “Time to make my egg-scape…That was egg-streme…This is egg-scrutiating.” Think they were all from Inspector Gadget. I got in the game, and August liked ones like She doesn’t like our yolks. Is this farm-iliar? That’s dairy observant of you. I shell-dom don’t know where your jokes come from.
They then played on the playground for a few minutes. Colin kept saying “All aboard!” the ship. August randomly asked “If you call 911, can you have them send all three at once?” ‘Dispatcher’ was a word of the day.
We were back to the house at 3:45. Colin was playing math app and didn’t want help when the other kids were trying to help him. August and Vivian were making a plan to make a dollar by selling stuff. They ended up making a bookmark factory and made a sign to advertise it. I was working on the couch, then went and bought two of them.
They ate dinner outside, then were on the trampoline. August got upset with Colin and hit him in there. A bit later, Carly and Cassie and August and Vivian played Monopoly Junior out on the picnic table. August only wanted to play with unlimited money, and started to get stressed out about having to pay money at some point before remembering he could get more.
They then did more fireworks with Jeff. They were chasing big army men that came down on parachutes. This was a hard one for Colin. He wasn’t fast enough to get to the first one, so Jeff got it for him. Colin had wanted to do it himself, and was really upset. They did three of those, then did regular fireworks. Jeff was cutting them open when they were done so they could see what was on the inside.
They came inside and he ate some toast and nectarine. Except he wouldn’t eat the red part in the middle so I would bite it out. He asked “What are handcuffs?” (Maybe from Inspector Gadget?) Vivian got a toy set to show him, and he asked me to look up a photo of a real pair. Jeff heard and asked if we really wanted to buy handcuffs, as he said someone has a pair for sale. The key was missing, but it is a universal key and he’s sure he has an extra key around the house somewhere.
August tied his balloon to a sandal so it wouldn’t get in the fan. He then took a bath with Vivian. Her balloon wouldn’t float after getting wet and we discussed hypotheses. I had to get his balloon as well so he could do it with his. Carly went in to rest, so no tea game today. I washed him. I then lay on the lower bed with all three kids and we read Berenstain Bears and the Messy Room and the Elephant and Piggie I Will Surprise My Friend! book. Actually, Vivian read the latter. All the kids sort of gave Carly a big hug at the same time as they said good night. Colin said “No go. No go home.” I left Carly and August around 10, and he was asleep by 10:30.

He came out about 8:15. Nice and quiet, and went and cuddled with Carly. Colin was out less than a minute later. Colin played with his cars on the track. August went and found Jeff to ask him why there was tape on Colin’s semi trailer.
I made them both cereal. Cassie fell asleep in her car again when she got home. I left at 9:15 and went to Union Coffee again.
I got an egg bowl, cookie, and latte and worked. I stopped and got gas on the way back, and got here at 12:30.
When I got back they were in the garage. I watched them and Carly went in and made lunch: chicken patties, pickles. I Then took a shower. After lunch they played in the bedroom and living room, chewing bubble gum.
Carly took them outside and they did a rotation of water balloons, taking turns spraying her with water, and reading the new book that she bought for August. August was doing a good job saying no to Colin.
Back inside they watched Smurfs and I made a big snack plate of strawberries, carrots, blueberries, and raisins. they ate the whole thing.
They went back outside. Less successful this time, as August hit Colin over the water balloons. It wasn’t too bad though, and Carly ended up having a great talk with August afterwards. Carly told him he could walk away, and he agreed that was a good idea, but said he’d forget what she tells him. He asked her to remind him a lot. We then played trucks again.
We ate quesadillas and burritos for dinner. The kids were being rather frustrating, finding it difficult to sit down and eat. After dinner Vivian set up cups on the counter, stacking them. Colin ran over and knocked them down once, then August and I helped defend from Colin. August was also playing with the helicopter thing (like a pencil with a propeller) and figuring out how to do it with his hands. He had a few good ones. We did a quick Brother game before we got going, about a girl who could teleport stuff to her hand.
We drove to the fair. when we got there August and Vivian chose to go to the butterflies first, and Colin went to see the tractors. As we entered, the guy gave us the instructions and said not to touch the butterflies with your fingers. August asked “Why?” The guy explained the oils on your hands hurt them.
We had fun with the butterflies. We walked up and got G.O.P. balloons and little airplanes from one of the politicians. then walked over and found Cassie and Colin.
Vivian and August wanted to do the panning for gemstones thing, so we did that. They really liked that.
Vivian, August, and I watched the band playing, and Cassie went and got french fries. The band played songs like “We’ve got to get out of this place” and “Stepping Stone”
We looked at the animals, and I started making jokes. When I said “Let’s moooove over there” Vivian said “Nice one!” And August got the joke and laughed when I commented on how we had fair weather today.
They went and played on the playground. Vivian climbed to the top of everything and danced. August would follow her, although skipped the dancing part. We went and got cotton candy, their treat of choice, then got going.
We were home at 9. As I came inside with them August was saying “Creatively stupid” for no particular reason. We talked about how it sounded like the phrase “aggressively cute” from Craig of the Creek. Colin came by saying “poopy head stupid” and August replied “I know, I know. You’ve said that a million times.” I had brought August’s balloon in, which was apparently a mistake. Vivian started crying. When they were driving, Colin’s window was open and his and Vivian’s balloons got sucked out. They started crying for ten minutes. While August said “That’s what I wanted to happen!” (Which is true, as we had to make him agree not to let his balloon go before we let him have one—I had then tied it to his watch so it wouldn’t get away, after it had gotten away from him once, luckily under a tent.)
August and I went into the bedroom so he could play with his balloon in private. When we went out Colin wanted his green rock. Cassie didn’t know where it was, and August offered to get a rock for Colin outside. We got our shoes on and used my phone flashlight to find a good rock. Colin thanked August for the rock.
I looked for Bread and Jam for Francis after I mentioned it and August didn’t remember it. Couldn’t find it on their shelves but found a few other books to read. Didn’t happen tonight though. He waited until they were done with their bath to do his. We said he had done a good job with Colin today and he said “You’re supposed to remind me to walk away.” I set a reminder to remind him tomorrow. In the bathroom they were discussing math and Vivian claimed that anything times one is always one. August corrected her, a bit much, and she got upset. We talked to him about ‘gloating’.
I gave him a quick bath and had him in bed at10:05. He asked Carly to say the mantra. Carly has been talking about exercising to be ready for the hike on the school trip and i heard him ask “Do you ever think you’ll be ready for that hike?”

He was up at 7:25. I tried to get him to lie back down, but he said it was daytime. He then got up and went to the bathroom. He was out with Carly for a while, then came back in the bedroom. He got his iPad and played Minecraft and showed me the hide and seek world that I’d downloaded.
We went out and I got him cereal and a banana for breakfast. He ate, but then got frustrated with the door—he wanted it closed so the heat wouldn’t come in, and Colin wanted the screen door. Cassie and Colin went outside, then August was closing the door completely and locking it. When I wouldn’t let him lock them out he got upset and I ended up taking him to the bedroom. He wasn’t really upset too bad, but when he saw Carly he insisted on her taking over. That was quickly going to become more of an issue, so I let her come in, and I went and took a shower.
After my shower he was still hungry, so I gave him 7 or 8 apple slices from yesterday and he ate all of those. As we got ready, he headed outside with Vivian. August asked me “What’s a tensiometer?” I looked it up and explained. Word of the day. I asked where he’d heard of it and he said Magic School Bus. That made sense. Colin found his worms and August found a nice piece of what we assume is quartz in the driveway, although it was whiter and clearer than the other pieces he’s found.
We got driving at 10:45. Parked, and were walking at 11:30. August asked “Did you know everything has an answer?” Then smiled as he asked “What’s the answer to why everything has an answer?”
Carly bought tickets for the museum and a ride on the canal boat. We had about 15 minutes, and we had some snack and Vivian and Colin tried the zip line in the playground.
Carly came back with the wristbands, and August wanted his on his wrist. The first time every. Probably helps that he’s been wearing bracelets and watches.
We went on the boat ride, which was about 50 minutes. It was a lot of fun, and we learned a lot, as the tour guide was really good. Supposedly rack and pinion was invented on the canal system. We also learned that the canal boat operators brought their families with them, and that when babies started crawling they would be tied with a rope. Sounded like a pretty good life for the time. The kids really liked the mules pulling the boats along. We had some excitement at the end as they missed the dock. They got a rope across, then the captain jumped to the shore to help pull the boat back to the dock.
After we got off August told me he had a boat that “I pulled it with 16000 peregrine falcons.” He then found a hole on the ground and asked one of the women what the hole was for. They thought it was an animal, but didn’t know for sure. We then walked to the stable and petted one of the mules and learned more about them.
From there we went to the museum. They climbed on the toy train outside for several minutes, then went inside. He and I had fun with the competing gears thing, then he and Vivian spent a lot of time in the corner where they learned about tillers and rudders and steered a boat back and forth. They were doing a lot of imagining.
They went back to the train outside and played there until I pointed out the tunnel in a hill and got them to go check it out. August tried going going over the hill and told me “I discovered mathematically that this is a faster way to get to the other side of the hill.”
We then went to the playground, where August watched kids doing the zip line, although he said he didn’t want to do it. August spent time jumping off a rock, trying to touch a leaf as he did so. He and Vivian went back to the train with Carly after having Carly ask Vivian if she’d play an imagining game with him. The train was full of electronics. We got going at 2:30.
On the way back we stopped at a nursery and Cassie looked at bark, then I kept going. They also stopped at a grocery store for a couple things. They were home about 4:30.
Colin and August played with the race track. August wanted to pretend to fix Colin’s car when it had a flat, so I took them out to find the pump. No luck finding it, but they played in the garage for a few minutes.
Back inside we had chili for dinner. Cassie asked me to set up her phone in her car, using bluetooth, so I did that. Cassie found the pump. August and Vivian weren’t playing with each other much; she had declared she doesn’t want to play in the fort. He was wandering around the living room, being bored, but said he liked being bored.
Jeff got home, and handed August a piece of titanium, since August had talked about titanium yesterday. They went outside with Carly, then Jeff launched fireworks. They came back in and had ice cream. When they finished Vivian commented that August was the only clean one. I worked two and a half hours.
Carly took a shower. August was still hungry, so he ate a banana. They went back outside and did a couple more fireworks, the louder one.
In the bedroom he was wrapping up in the blankets and sheets, pretending to be a caterpillar. He claimed that cheetahs aren’t cats because they aren’t cute and make him allergic.
He said “You know, Mooka Mook the cat.” He meant Shmorgadeboop. I Sang the Big Numbers song and he was sleep by 10:20.

I woke him up at 8:40. He took a couple minutes, then went straight into the bathroom. As we came out Carly told him to check the mail. She had made a card for him with a little rebus in it. I explained the word and how I remember them from something as a kid (beer bottle lids?). Cassie made pancakes and the kids ate them. August sat at the little green metal doll table. After he was done, he asked “How could they eat so much so slow?” He’s a much faster eater than Colin and Vivian.
When they were all done eating they went in the fort. I heard August telling Vivian “Every animals electronic: Animals have nerves, and nerves carry electricity, so…”
They went outside, and August put on a pair of gardening gloves. He and Vivian were finding rocks, then I ended up with the kids by the playground. August was digging for worms and insects, and I was pushing Colin on the swing.
We went in at 10:45. He asked about heat killing germs and washed his hands in warm water. We got driving to the science center around 11. He and Vivian played Minecraft. We parked, walked to the science center, and I took him to the bathroom. He crawled out of the stall under the door, even though it was unlocked. We started looking around at 12:30.
He and Vivian mainly stayed together. First floor, then down to the basement. Saw the live snake down there. Then up to the second floor. He pointed out a pectolite geode. ‘Geode’ was a word of the day. The one thing they spent the most time on was the webcam (August said it was a spy camera that he had installed) showing about 6 bird feeders. We saw 6 or 7 different species of birds, and up to 9 birds at a time.
Carly had waited in line to get the tickets to the 1pm magic show. We eventually headed outside and sat at picnic tables across the road and ate some lunch. August ate a little cold pizza, but the others wouldn’t. too cold.
We went back inside for the magic show. August and Vivian sat together across the aisle from us. When the magician would ask for a volunteer Vivian would raise her hand and get as tall as possible. August wouldn’t raise his hand, but later pointed out he was being quiet.
The magician was quite good, and funny, and worked well with kids. Carly dealt with squirmy Colin on her lap. He also enjoyed it, but kept missing the jokes or tricks and then asking what was funny. The magician did the standard tricks, like ripping apart a newspaper and putting it back together, having some one guess a specific card (or cereal box, in this case), the sight gag of magic wands that pull out of each other, producing more and more wands, etc.
It was about 45 minutes, then we headed back outside. We went over to the picnic tables again and the kids played around there. August had found a place with a bunch of centipedes, so Colin got more of those. August was intrigued by a big tree stump and had me count the rings. I counted at least 90. We then walked over to the sensory playground. There were glass marble things and August said the lines through them were little wormholes. We touch/looked at/smelled the plants in the sensory tables, and August found another stump. Carly and I went to him, but after a minute he told us to go away; he seemed to be enjoying time on his stump. Colin and I ran up and down a wooden bridge, and he scared me jumping off a big fake hollow log in the playground. I caught him by his stomach, one handed, and slowed his descent. I was pretty impressed with that, but he was upset that I didn’t let him do it on his own.
We walked the .3 mile interpretive trail. There was an outdoor classroom area, and Vivian led climbing up on it and dancing. August joined her. I was surprised he was able to climb up. He danced as well. Colin also got up. August was doing his robot dance. They were also answering questions. Back down, August found a spider on the rocks.
We came out by a roadway and crossed to the big regular playground. August mainly sat with me in the shade and had a snack, while the other two went and played. Colin was trying to climb a slide and got near the top and fell on his chin, ripping off the scab. A good amount of blood from that.
We stopped in at the museum before we left to use bathrooms, but August and Vivian wanted to be Native Americans for a while. They went in the bark house, then were running around doing things like gathering berries and hunting bison (which I’m pretty sure the Lenape didn’t do, but okay).
We got going, and stopped at a place called Home Plate Dairy on the way back, mainly so that Cassie could wake up Colin so his nap wasn’t too long. The kids all a flavor called Unicorn something. Carly, and I think Cassie, had jilted cow, and I had soft serve black raspberry. The workers were amused that we all got kid sizes. I also got an eggplant sandwich, which turned out to be sort of like an onion ring sandwich. Not bad, but not quite the healthy option it sounded like.
We sat up at a picnic table on the grass behind the restaurant. There was an odd fake totem pole up there, so that was a word of the day. When he was done, August found a stick and was playing around with it, first as a sword and then, as he sang, “it’s actually a magical spy stick…”
We left at 6:15 and were back in the house about 7. Carly and Cassie made veggies and veggie burgers. I made the coffee. The kids found their iPads. We ate, then they played in the fort. When Colin wanted to play, August said it was okay, and even said he could move back so that Colin could get in. But then Vivian and August were both complaining that Colin was wrecking things. Before they could escalate, August got out and came and told me. I asked Colin if he wanted to come out and play trucks with me. He did, and as he came out I heard August back in the fort telling Vivian that he had told his dada.
Colin and I started playing with cars, lining them all up. Eventually, August came and joined us. I talked about comparing them to see which was fastest, and Jeff went and got the blue track from upstairs in the garage. We set it up in the play area, starting with a chair, and used a bunch of other toys to make a hilly track.
At one point Colin took me out to show me the worms. He held my hand and said something about what Cassie says about holding hands. We went in after a few minutes. We went inside and Vivian and August getting hyper in the bedroom. They played on the couch, then all took a bath together. Carly was tired, so she put August to sleep. I left them after 10. Carly came out to finish washing her shirt, and it got quiet pretty quickly around 10:15. I heard the mantra playing.

August and Carly came out just after 8. He found the tape measure and measured on the floor a few times. I helped him figure out how to read it. It was 16 feet from where he sat to the edge of the rug. He then had it come back to him fast a few times. Carly and Cassie were worrying about him hurting his fingers and also scratching the floor. So they did it one more time and then saved it for later outside.
Colin came down right after that. He wanted Carly to pick him up, but didn’t want to take off his used sleep diaper first.
August wanted to do a Brother game so we went into the bedroom. A short one where Bar ‘helped’ Brother open a broken washing machine that he was trying to fix by cutting it open with a laser. He then flopped backwards from the window onto the bed. Apparently something he learned from Vivian.
We went back out for awhile. He ended up walking around in circles, explaining how on My Planet everything is made of cake, with ice cream inside. But the ice cream is all mystery flavors, some which include tree nuts. So Carly decided she couldn’t go there. Of course, there is also an atmosphere of nuclear gasses, which causes explosions like fireworks, so that would be another reason.
He wanted another Brother game, this time with a girl who can turn anything into treats. We went and did that. The girl could eat all she wanted and not get sick, but he didn’t have that power. She ended up turning all of their garbage into food.
Vivian was up after 9 and he saw her. He got his iPad, then discovered the Minecraft mods that I had installed. They explored those together. He was very excited by these. Carly made French toast. They ate, then went and played in the fort. Colin tried to take away the rocket launcher from August. We intervened before any sort of hitting, but Augst didn’t like the intervention and Carly took him into the room. After coming out he ate a second toast.
Colin wanted play dough. Vivian got an art box of hers out when I got the play dough stuff. Colin played with it with his trucks, then we made an alligator and put sticky eyes on it. Vivian made an arrow.
August had an idea for a Brother game and wanted to show Vivian. We went to the bedroom but they ended up jumping on and off the bed as we listened to Erasure. August would tell her “You have permission for the ignition of the mission.” That’s from when they were telling Jeff they were ready for him to light a firework. We ended up doing stories where he met someone that turned things into cake. And then the computer games restarting. A lot of craziness. Colin came in and they all ended up jumping off the bed. Colin was doing big jumps and then forward rolls.
Cassie got back from going to Weis. The kids went out and played in the fort. Evil Wizard for a while, then Carly rested. They played in the fort and I was able to work. August played with the cash register, making the total go into the thousands of dollars by pushing the button repeatedly. Then Cassie got out these prickly seed like things that you can build with. They played with those and Colin joined them.
More playing and then we got ready to go to a park. It rained though, contrary to the predictions of Dark Sky and Accuweather. August ran around in the rain again. They then collected nice rocks (“crystal rocks”). Vivian remembered we were supposed to go to a park and said “The twins are really impatient right now.” In fact they were relaxing in the car. We never did go to the park. Colin pretended to drive the lawnmower. And Vivian went on her scooter. August focused on rocks. I walked around, breaking in my sandals and listening to an audiobook.
We all went over to their play structure and we started picking weeds. Vivian and August helped a bit before focusing on finding animals. August and I had watched a groundhog out in the yard. August was digging at a hole with a shovel and broke open an ant nest. And they found lots of big worms. August found a millipede, or centipede. Vivian was picking up ants and eggs and putting them in a jar. August and I had already abandoned the area because they were crawling all over our feet. They made it up Vivian’s arms/legs to her body and started biting her. Cassie rushed to her rescue and they took off her dress to get at the ants.
August got on the picnic table and picked walnuts for Colin. He then started stripping leaves from the low branches. Cassie asked him if it was a satisfying feeling. He liked the look of it, although we thought it was rather ugly.
Cassie and I carried the table to the back. The kids had a snack at the table, then they played in the trampoline. We went inside. Colin went out and brought in all of their water bottles all on his own. Vivian and August then supported Colin as he traced letters on his iPad: “Go Colin, go Colin!” Which he then repeated to himself later.
They ate pizza outside, then did the letter writing game, putting mail for each other in the mail box. I got educational videos going: one on wormholes, then the other two Lego ones. I was sad to see there were only three of those total. Cassie got a present from Jeff’s dad and wife. She let the kids help her unwrap everything. Colin fooled me about his dad being home. They were playing with the relaxing eye pillow that Cassie got (and which Colin had promptly gotten some snot on, giving it the moniker of the ‘snot pillow’). I suggested the game that Cherie had sent via email the other day: lying down on the couch and stacking things on them while they practiced being still and slowly breathing.
Vivian and I got the kitchen stuff and started with August. This game went on for a long time. Vivian was the biggest fan. I think we stacked stuff on her five times. When they were done the would throw everything off and we’d take a slo-mo video of it. Jeff got home to see Vivian do it once. Colin got into it, and he surprised Vivian and me, who had both predicted he wouldn’t be able to be all that still.
When we were done Vivian and August did a great job helping us pick up. Although when we were done and Vivian found something in the couch August said “The goal is to not look so you don’t have to pick up as much stuff.”
They went back to doing the mail game. He told Carly “Carly, get your mail.” August and Colin had a conflict over the mailbox, but compromised on it. Not sure if I mentioned the incident yesterday or earlier today where Colin got upset about August having one of his trucks. He was yelling, but I realized he was saying “Two minutes!” When we realized that August agreed to play with it for two minutes. Colin calmed down, then August gave it back before the two minutes was up.
More mail writing. August wrote “PP Poop” for Vivian. The two of them are learning how to write the important words, apparently. None of them really mentioned ice cream for quite awhile, and weren’t excited by it. Although they eventually wanted it. They had ice cream, then Carly gave them a bath. We got him ready, said good night, and I left at 9:50. He was asleep a little after 10:20.

He was up at 8:05. He’s comfortable in the house now, as the door was closed and instead of yelling or anything he just came out and started looking for us. Didn’t take long, as I was sitting on the couch. I picked him up, and he asked for mama. We we around and found her on the back porch. He melted to the floor and lay on the rug, then cuddled with her in the corner chair by the sliding door. About the first thing he said was that “9 plus 9 on My Planet is 406.092.” Or some number like that. He said one of his multiplication rhymes that doesn’t actually work, then we made up ‘Six by six, picking up sticks. Counted them up there were 36.’ And ‘Five by five, going for a drive, speeding along at 25.’
Carly talked about how she was leaving soon, and we talked about Amazon packages and ordering things. That led to a discussion of new Crocs for him and whether we were going to shop for them or order them. August said “They have to be pink.” He had cereal for breakfast.
He played with Colin, and intentionally got him playing with trucks so that he would leave Cassie alone. He was impatient for Vivian to come down and asked about her a couple times. Colin got upset when August was playing with a Paw Patrol vehicle. August eventually gave it to him. Vivian was down after 9:30.
When the phone rang he really wanted to talk on the phone, even though it was probably a telemarketer.
Cassie made French toast for her kids, but August said he was full. But he changed his mind after they were eating and he had a slice. Carly headed to Walmart for an eye doctor appointment and to do some shopping. The kids got on the iPad. Vivian wanted to play Polytopia, but I got her to switch to GroGarden. They did some Minecraft after that. Colin was tracing letters on his. The curvy ones are quite difficult for him, so I was helping him. He was very persistent about it though.
August wants new worlds for Minecraft. We looked for free ones. Eventually I figured out how to install them. He was out of time for today, but I installed a couple things. Vivian went and made muffins. She didn’t want to follow a recipe and made it up herself. They looked quite nice, a lovely pink, and after Carly got back about 12:40 the kids all tried them. They were disappointed though, as she had used too much baking soda. August really liked the chocolate chips in them though. Oddly, they had also eaten the leftover batter, and seemed fine with that. As Cassie was scooping it up August was going on and on about how you could use math to do it. Cassie said “Here you go” and he said “Okay!” and took the cup.
I told him about the “Bitter butter” tongue twister and he instead made up a TIME twister and had to tell everyone about it (at least me, Vivian, and Carly): “I made a time twister…it can tie a portion of time in a knot…”
We got going to Stroudsburg. I drove separately. Colin had a class at his school. So we went there first. We were early, about 2, and it was at 2:15. We looked at art in the hallway. Cassie wasn’t sure if we were supposed to wander around and so was talking about breaking rules. August said “What do you mean? I wouldn’t get in trouble. I’m not even from this country.”
We dropped Colin off, then Carly snuck back in with August so he could use a bathroom. We went across to the playground. The kids played for a few minutes, doing some climbing. But Vivian fell a couple times. And they played off of each other, trying to get slurpees. First, Vivian told August all about them, then said to Cassie “August really wants to go get slurpees.” A couple minutes later August asked Carly if he could get a slurpee like Vivian was doing, even though no one had agreed to anything. They are getting sneaky.
We walked the block to the Wawa and got slurpees. I got a coffee, much to the amusement of the sisters. We went back to the school and sat in the gazebo. Colin came out from his class and joined us. Vivian had made him a slurpee. Then it started to rain. Hard for a couple minutes. August had been a little worried about the rain before it began, but now, as it slowed a little, he suddenly ran out into it. He did it several times, with Vivian joining him. It was like the moment he suddenly decided we could recycle the stroller. When he saw some people walking with umbrellas he yelled “How dare you use umbrellas! It’s so nice out here!…Maybe they’re walking a long distance.”
Cassie and Carly were wondering how the main entrance ended up being on this odd corner of the building. I walked around and figured it out, I think, as parking had probably switched sides when they built a high school on the other side.
They finished their slurpees, as much as they wanted, and August and Vivian wandered around a bit. We then got going, and got to downtown, meter parking, and got to the photo place for Vivian’s passport photo by 3:40.
The other kids watched. Colin got upset when he didn’t get a turn, so Carly took pictures of him, making funny faces, then Vivian and August joined him. Before we left they each got a honey stick. It was looking like a very treat-heavy day.
We headed home, back by 4:10. They played in the garage. August tried out the balance bike. He gave Cassie an old man “Okaaay” when she suggested it. He mainly liked the bell though and told me as much. I went inside for a minute, then came back out and August was trying out the bicycle with training wheels. He worked on that for several minutes, and I helped a bit. He rode over to the door of the gun room and stood on a stool to play with the combination lock. He was pretty interested in that.
They went inside and Vivian and August played with toothpicks. They wanted to poke them in Vivian’s yoga mat, and Cassie suggested play dough instead. They got tht out and played with that for quite a bit. I spun a coin with Colin and tried to teach him how to do it.
Vivian and August brought up the question ‘What is nuclear?’ I talked a little about atoms, then found some videos. We watched the 3 Kurzgesagt videos on nuclear power (starting withhttps://youtu.be/rcOFV4y5z8c
), then I told Colin I’d find one about cars, so we watched the Lego video about how cars work (https://youtu.be/Fe-XOXul-7M).
We ate a delicious curry that Cassie made for dinner. Carly and Vivian went outside.
August, Colin, and I played with play dough. I showed August how to use the play dough press to make different shapes. More flood warnings came though on our phones due to the rain.
They had banana splits again, this time also with peaches and raspberries. When Cassie saw that Vivian had a dirty face she asked to wash it. When Vivian protested, August actually asked Cassie to wash his. Which was as shocking as him running in the rain.
They all played well in it for quite awhile, until Colin and Vivian had a disagreement over some object. Yelling ensued and we all rushed to the fort. Cassie took him upstairs.
Carly did the Evil Wizard game with them while I did some work. The dishwasher was leaking. Jeff and Cassie were working on it. The kids were interested, and we got them out for awhile, then they did baths. More tea game.
When August was out of his bth he went and discussed the dishwasher with Jeff. He was sharing his ides for why it might be leaking. A lot of thinking going on. He ate some apple and Cheerios with soy milk.
I reminded him of his sidewalk sealant song, and he sang a “Water system sealant” version. He also recommended a titanium alloy. I looked up what metals are mixed in titanium alloys. August told me that in his lab he takes apart dishwashers by drilling into them. He liked that idea and ran off to tell Carly: “Mama! Here’s how I take apart washing machines.”
We went in and did some Brother stories that started with him drilling into washing machines. He snuck upstairs when Carly carried Colin up and got a little frustrated again about having to go back down to go to bed.
He was in bed at 10, then of course wanted his water bottle. He told me “I made a dessert that is so strong that each bite has to be one particle or less.” He wanted a story and I told him about my Disneyland trip in high school. I told him I liked how he had been troubleshooting with Jeff. He asked what ‘troubleshooting’ meant so we discussed that. I sang a couple songs and he was asleep at 10:35.
